The UK network of specialist serious injury solicitors supporting people after life-changing injury

About Day One Trauma Support

Day One Trauma Support is the only charity supporting major trauma patients and their families in the UK, regardless of injury type or location. Created by patients for patients, we provide practical and emotional support so people can rebuild their lives and look forward to the future.

We can help with:

  • Emergency funding, so money is one less thing to worry about. Our grants cover costs like accommodation, travel, clothes or equipment.
  • Peer support from someone who has been through a similar experience. Talking can help you feel less anxious about the road ahead.
  • 24 hour counselling support to provide a free, confidential space to talk.

We work in partnership with NHS trusts by providing caseworkers in Major Trauma Centres so we can be by the side of patients and their families from day one. Our national support offer also means we are available to anyone affected by major trauma, whenever and wherever you need us.

Services provided by Day One Trauma Support

Counselling

Counselling is funded by Day One Trauma Support and provided by our approved provider Care First, who provide professional counselling support from clinically trained experts. People referred by Day One can make a telephone call to the Care First line at any time, day or night, to speak to a counsellor who can provide ‘in the moment’ support, to help them deal with any immediate anxiety, for example if they are feeling overwhelmed or unable to sleep.

  • Peer Support

Our Peer Support Volunteers provide you with an opportunity to talk with someone who has had a similar experience to you. They're a listening ear for you to talk about the things that may be worrying you. They may also be able to answer your questions about what to expect in terms of how you feel, what might happen during treatment and what to expect as you begin to recover at home.

Above all, our team of caring and committed Peer Supporters are here to inspire hope, alleviate loneliness and create a safe space to support you or your family during this difficult and sometimes frightening time.

  • Emergency Funding

When your loved one is admitted to the Major Trauma Centre there may be costs associated with travelling to see them in hospital and staying overnight in a hotel or B&B.

Our Emergency Fund is available to families and loved ones to help cover the costs incurred during a patient's stay in hospital. This includes travel and accommodation costs, parking and other unforeseen expenses such as clothes, food and toiletries. People can also apply for support from the Emergency Fund to help cover the cost of equipment that they may need discharged from hospital, for example, mobility aids that are not readily available through the NHS.

  • Taking away the stress: Nick’s story

Nick and Kerry Godbehere were celebrating their wedding anniversary when they received a call saying their children Charlie and Emma had been admitted to hospital following a car crash. While his children were being treated, Nick heard about the support available from Day One through our caseworker Justin.

Nick said: “When Justin mentioned that we could get some financial help, it sounded too good to be true. Emma had been admitted to hospital without any shoes as they’d come off in the crash and Charlie needed adult-sized clothes because of his injuries. Emergency funding from Day One made a huge difference. It took away the stress of worrying about money, when we had more important things to worry about.”

  • There for the family: Saeeda’s story

Shafqat and Saeeda’s lives were changed in an instant when Shafqat broke his pelvis, arm and ribs in a devastating car crash. It took him two years to return to work.

Saeeda said: “It’s something you think only happens to other people and not your own loved ones. The surgeons were brilliant at mending Shafqat’s bones, but the emotional impact on my husband was horrendous. Day One was absolutely brilliant. Their support was so important. Without Day One we wouldn’t have known where to go.”

  • It’s good to talk: Grace’s story

Grace underwent 20 hours of surgery and had her face reconstructed after sustaining multiple injuries during a farming accident. She spent a lot of time on her own in hospital due to restrictions in place during the coronavirus pandemic. Day One put her in touch with Peer Support Volunteer Martin.

Grace said: “The hospital staff were amazing at looking after me physically, but when your life has been wiped out from under you, it’s that extra support from Day One that you really need. I don’t think I realised how much it helped to talk about it, but I still remember that first conversation really well. There’s still some work to do, but I’m confident I’ll get there, and grateful for how far I’ve come.”
