Tis the season to stay sober behind the wheel

As the festive season approaches, many of us look forward to celebrations with family, friends, and colleagues. Unfortunately, this time of year also brings a worrying rise in drink driving across the UK. Despite repeated public warnings and well-known legal consequences, police forces consistently report a spike in alcohol-related road incidents between late November and early January. The combination of social gatherings, increased alcohol consumption, and a belief that “one or two drinks won’t hurt” can have catastrophic results.

Alcohol severely impairs a driver’s reaction times, judgement, and ability to accurately judge speed and distance. Even small amounts can affect coordination and concentration, turning what would normally be a manageable situation into a dangerous one. During the festive period, roads are typically busier, weather conditions are often poorer, and visibility is reduced—all factors that already increase the risk of collisions. When alcohol is added into the equation, the likelihood of a serious crash rises dramatically.

The consequences of drink driving stretch far beyond fines, driving bans, or a criminal record. For many, it leads to life-changing trauma injuries. Emergency services and major trauma centres often prepare for an uptick in severe road traffic collisions during December. Victims can suffer devastating injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, complex fractures, and internal bleeding. These injuries can require lengthy hospital stays, extensive rehabilitation, and in some cases, can leave individuals with permanent disabilities.

The emotional impact is equally profound. Families may face long-term caring responsibilities, psychological trauma, grief, and significant financial strain. Communities lose colleagues, friends, and loved ones to incidents that are entirely preventable. For survivors, the road to recovery can be long and challenging, affecting not only their physical health but also their independence, employment, and overall quality of life.

Preventing drink driving is a shared responsibility. Planning ahead is key—whether by arranging a designated driver, booking a taxi, or choosing alcohol-free options if you intend to drive. Equally important is challenging friends or colleagues who believe they are “fine to drive” after drinking. A difficult conversation in the moment could prevent a lifetime of consequences.

This festive season, enjoy the celebrations—but remember that getting behind the wheel after drinking puts lives at risk. By making safer choices, we can all play a part in reducing preventable injuries and keeping our roads safer for everyone.
